How to prepare for the Literature/English EOY

The three aspects of the English EOY exams are Essay/Situational Writing, Comprehension and Literature.

Essay and Situational Writing:
To prepare for this is hard. Writing essays is almost an on-the-spot thing. It takes creativity and careful writing to achieve a good mark. With an unknown topic, one can only perhaps practice their grammar and vocabulary skills to avoid losing marks.

Comprehension
This one could do with some preparation. One has to understand the passage, which is where understanding prose proves to be a valuable asset. Also the vocabulary section also can be helpful to gain the extra 5 marks. Micro Fiction would help in the Summary. Time management is crucial.

Literature
There is one definite factor here. Animal Farm - Squealer. One should read up on the notes given to prepare for the exam. For the unseen piece, reading up the notes and previous assignments is also useful. Of course a good vocabulary can be put to good use in shortening and making it the answer "tighter".

For all the components, one factor is important. A good vocabulary. To obtain that, one should read more often and more widely.

MBA

We will get there

Remember the days, we set out together with faith?

Remember the times, so fine, when we thought that

Nothing could stand in our way?

Then things weren't the same, the life that we knew had to change

We've struggled through, the darkest storms

We thought we couldn't tame

Together we've tried, as we stood side by side

I knew we'd build a new world

A world of hope for ever after

Chorus:

Deep in my heart I just know

Right from the start, we will grow

Look where we are, we've come so far

And there's still a long, long way to go

With all of my heart, I will care

I'll play my part, I will share

With family and friends, together we'll stand

And in the end, hand in hand

We will get there

So now we begin, working together to win

Believing in trust, it must

Be possible to overcome anything

There's so much to do, there's so much we can contribute

By sharing just a little love

We will start again anew

So why don't we try? If we stand side by side

I know we'll build a new world

A world of hope for ever after

Deep in my heart I just know

Right from the start, we will grow

Look where we are, we've come so far

And there's still a long, long way to go

With all of my heart, I will care

I'll play my part, I will share

With family and friends, together we'll stand

And in the end, hand in hand

We will get there

_________________________________________________

This poem expresses me – who I am, what I am like now, how I feel about life. The life during primary used to be easy and relaxed. “the times so fine.” My friends and I used to imagine ourselves as a grown-up, having graduated the top of the university. “when we thought that nothing could stand in our way.”

Then, things changed after we all advanced to secondary school. The life we had got used to over six years of primary education had to change. It changed from a relaxed to a busier schedule. “Then things weren't the same, the life that we knew had to change”. All of us struggled from the lack of sleep and the our ignorance of some topics that we now are so familiar with. “We've struggled through, the darkest storms”. We had thought we would never come through secondary school life. “We thought we couldn't tame”.

After the shock of the abrupt changes in our life, we decided that we would work best in a group so we got together despite going to different schools. “Together we've tried, as we stood side by side”. We still maintain the confidence that one day in the future, we will be successful in whatever field we are in and contribute to mankind in one way or another. “I knew we'd build a new world A world of hope for ever after”.

In my heart, I know that we will continue to advance and progress to the higher levels of education. “Deep in my heart I just know Right from the start, we will grow”. At the end of primary six, we looked back to our first day of primary one. It seemed such a long time ago. But when we look forward to our bright future, we realize there is a much longer path to follow. “Look where we are, we've come so far And there's still a long, long way to go”
I care for all those close and dear to me “with all of my heart”. I will play my part in the contribution to society, I will share what I know which others may not know. “I'll play my part, I will share” Friends and family are those who are closest and dearest to me, together we will walk on and work together towards our goals and finally, we will arrive at our destination. “With family and friends, together we'll stand And in the end, hand in hand We will get there”.

So now we start on the long arduous journey, working together towards our objectives. “So now we begin, working together to win”. We trust each other and believe in it, then we will be able to work as a cohesive group. “Believing in trust, it must”, thus being to achieve almost everything. “Be possible to overcome anything”

There is too much to do on this world, as much as we are able to contribute. “There's so much to do, there's so much we can contribute”. And just by sharing a little love by doing charity and helping the world’s people. “By sharing just a little love”.
We can then undo whatever wrong we have done. “We will start again anew”.
We ought to try to contribute, (So why don't we try?) if we work together we can make an entirely new, better world(I know we'll build a new world). A world better for the rest of the world. A world with hope.(A world of hope for ever after)

This poem shows what I place first in my heart; friends and family. I truly believe that working with those who I get along well with will increase the efficiency of our work. And the confidence that I have in my friends and I that we will one day be successful is from the bottom of my heart.

Since this song is about working together with other people; friends and family, and my learning style is interpersonal, I think a poem on working together is in order.

We are never alone

Even in the darkest of times,
When there was no light
At the end of a seemingly endless tunnel

We are never alone

We may sometimes think that
We have to do a task all by ourselves
But I will show you that

We are never alone

In the most hopeless of times
Where you have given up
You will see, beside you, family. See?

We are never alone

You decide to work with them
And together you
Start to chip away at the most solid of rock
Keeping others from you
And you hear on the other side
Similar scraping noises

We are never alone

Soon, by removing all that stands between allies
You soon mass a large number of friends
And with your family,
Start to rush to the narrow beam of light
Which was granted for your unity
The first arrives, and pulls the gap wider
So everyone can escape
The imprisonment of being alone

We are never alone

Having succeeded
Cheers and hugs,
Everyone is happy.
Even the jailer rejoices at the reunion of the prisoner
For it was the clever him
Who wanted to teach to all
We are never alone

Poem on a household ..... thing.

It can be good
It can be bad
But without it my mood
Will turn sad

With it, there are two paths
One to go further in knowledge
In English, Science and Maths
The other to push you over the edge

P.S (It is a computer.)

Reflection for online lessons

I) Overall did you put in more hours per day with E-Learning or a regular school day with homework?

On the whole, I spent more time with E-learning on the homework. This is because I have access to much more resources to give the best assignment and therefore I spent much time on the Internet doing research, and some times I get carried away.

II)Were you able to complete the Language Arts assignments in about an hour each or did they take longer?

Longer. I took things at a more relaxed pace and could use the resources I had do my work, such as the Internet.

III)I like assignment 3 the most as it allowed me to express my feelings and emotions through poetry. I did not like assignment 1 that much because I could not find much figurative language in my chosen poem.

IV)A designated day for to post each assignment so we do not attempt all at once in an attempt to finish the homework quickly(and to do other recreational activities) and ending up learning nothing at all. And perhaps some clearer formatting and instructions.

V) I enjoyed E-learning. The pace is relaxed yet time rushes past us in great dollops, and soon we will be back in school. Only thing is that there is little interaction and socialising. Great learning experience for English and other subjects.

Lesson 6

Q2)

I do not think that it is right to build a casino . Despite the fact that there are advantages, the negative effects of a casino outweigh its advantages.

It is true that by building a casino, the economy will be boosted and more jobs will have been created. However, the negative effects are much more. Building a casino will present opportunities to carry out illegal money-lending activities such as money laundering, embezzlement and bribery.

Also, a casino results in an increase in crimes as addicts who have run out of money, will attempt to get more money in hope that he will earn more through gambling. The first source he or she will turn to is family and relatives. If they refuse to fund his gambling habits, he will, in a desperate attempt, rob or steal to obtain money without a thought about others. These acts are destroying the moral values of the people. They will not care about others or even themselves.

Therefore, I object to the opening of a casino in Singapore which will ultimately do more harm than good to the people.

Lesson 3

My badge has a Latin motto
Hope for the future
The future is hope
Or something

At times black crows try to interrupt
When we sing the National Anthem

It is difficult to maintain
The whiteness of my shoes

Especially on Wednesdays I must admit there is something quite special
About the bare thighs of hardworking scouts

The Malay chauffeurs
Who wait for my schoolmates
Sit on the car park kerb
Telling jokes to one another
Seven to the power of five is unreasonable

On Chinese New Year Mrs Lee dressed up
In a sarong kebaya
And sang Bengawan Solo

The capital of Singapore is Singapore

My best friend did a heroic thing once
Shaded all A’s
For his Chinese Language Multiple-choice paper

In our annual yearbook
There is a photograph of me
Pushing a wheelchair and smiling
They caught me
At the exact moment
When my eyes were actually closed

This poem was written in the form of a free verse, structuring it like daily conversation, as if it was trying to engage the reader in normal conversation, relating events about school life, rather than poetically. Alliterations were not used, showing that making this poem have a musical effect is not the top priority in composing this poem. Imagery was used. For example, "black crows" and "whiteness of my shoes". Even though these are not very strong "pictures", they enable the reader to "see" what the poet is trying to show.

1)The poet misses his secondary school. He recalls many significant details of the time he had, regardless of whether it happened regularly or not. Many of the things he remembers are those of happy times, that he did not leave this school without regrets. He seems to want to go back to secondary school life given the chance, to enjoy his past memories once more.

2)Poem of my school

My old school.
My old classroom.
My old teacher.
My old friends.

It was such a long time
Since we moaned about homework.
It was such a long time
Since we cheered when the bell rang.
It was such a long time
Since we had to do practice papers.
It was indeed such a long time
Since we were told to sit down and be quiet.

The computer lab.
Our old haunt.
Pleading,
Rioting,
Begging,
With our teacher,
To let us go.

Chaos
Havoc
and Anarchy
That was how we used to describe
The greatness of our class

After great struggles, we came through
Half went with honors,
Leaving with pages of valuable history
Recorded by our young school.
Others were not bad
Though there were better

Yet all were proud to have
A book each
In the history record
Having gone through and done the unprecedented

Despite the joys and celebration as a class,
There was sadness
It was time to go.
Parting is such sweet sorrow.

We swore
through tears and smiles
that we would stay as one.
One united class. One united group of forever friends.

Lesson 4

1)The title "Paper" refers to the stocks that were bought. Stocks are actually another form of gambling. As the stocks goes up, the value of the "paper" rises and money is made. In the end, the man dies but has a grand funeral showing what he might have gained. A large house, a car, a happy family. In paper.
2)Ah Boh was extremely superstitious when she was gambling. She tried to recall dreams and interpret them to give herself numbers, believing it was a mystical fore=ce who gave her the numbers wanted her to help her win.Sh even went so far as to weighing her employer's cat and asking a month-old baby to help her pick numbers. Worst of all, she would go and rush to accident scenes and stand the gruesome sight just to copy down the car plate numbers of the cars involved in the accidents. These unfounded beliefs just led Ah Boh to gamble even more despite her employer's accident.
3)It was his uncle, Oscar Cresswell. He gave Paul his first winning note. This encouraged Paul to continue gambling. After dicovering that Paul could predict the winning horse, Uncle Oscar decided to become partners with Paul in hope that Paul would help him to obtain vast wealth. This was also an encouragement to Paul to continue with his gambling streak. The constant encouragement ultimately led to Paul's dead.

P.S How did Paul manage to shout Malabar when he was supposed to be unconscious?

Lesson 5

2)The Paper compared to the Green Clothes.
The tips in the Green Clothes was tips on how to buy stocks on the Paper.
Having dry lips refers to the anticipation of whether the person "won" or "lost".
All was lost when the stocks crashed in the Paper, so all was in vain
3) The Lottery compared to the One-Dollar Gamble
Ah Boh has one dollar to bet. The blind man is Ah Boh's mother.13 is the most unlucky number. The number is found in gruesome car accidents in which Ah Boh would visit in order to obtain numbers to gamble on. Eventually, Ah Boh will have no more money to gamble with since her employer is now dead.

My Favourite Poet

My favourite poet is William Shakespeare. Although he is more famous as a play writer, he has composed 400 poems. His literary works have lived on since the 16th century till now.

Background:
William Shakespeare was born in Stratford-upon-Avon, allegedly on April 23, 1564. Church records from Holy Trinity Church indicate that he was baptized there on April 26, 1564. Young William was born of John Shakespeare, a glover and leather merchant, and Mary Arden, a landed heiress. William, according to the church register, was the third of eight children the Shakespeare household—three of whom died in childhood. John Shakespeare had a remarkable run of success as a merchant, and later as an alderman and high bailiff of Stratford, during William's early childhood. His fortunes declined, however, in the 1570s. Shakespeare's success is apparent when studied against other playwrights of this age. His company was the most successful in London in his day. He had plays published and sold in octavo editions, or "penny-copies" to the more literate of his audiences. It is noted that never before had a playwright enjoyed sufficient acclaim to see his works published and sold as popular literature in the midst of his career. While Shakespeare could not be accounted wealthy, by London standards, his success allowed him to purchase New House and retire in comfort to Stratford in 1611.

William Shakespeare wrote his will in 1611, bequeathing his properties to his daughter Susanna (married in 1607 to Dr. John Hall). To his surviving daughter Judith, he left £300, and to his wife Anne left "my second best bed." William Shakespeare allegedly died on his birthday, April 23, 1616. This is probably more of a romantic myth than reality, but Shakespeare was interred at Holy Trinity in Stratford on April 25. In 1623, two working companions of Shakespeare from the Lord Chamberlain's Men, John Heminges and Henry Condell, printed the First Folio edition of the Collected Works, of which half the plays contained therein were previously unpublished. The First Folio also contained Shakespeare's sonnets.

William Shakespeare's legacy is a body of work that will never again be equaled in Western civilization. His words have endured for 400 years, and still reach across the centuries as powerfully as ever. Even in death, he leaves a final piece of verse as his epitaph.

O from what power hast thou this powerful might
O, from what power hast thou this powerful might
With insufficiency my heart to sway?
To make me give the lie to my true sight,
And swear that brightness doth not grace the day?
Whence hast thou this becoming of things ill,
That in the very refuse of thy deeds
There is such strength and warrantise of skill
That, in my mind, thy worst all best exceeds?
Who taught thee how to make me love thee more,
The more I hear and see just cause of hate?
O, though I love what others do abhor,
With others thou shouldst not abhor my state.
If thy unworthiness raised love in me,
More worthy I to be beloved of thee.

In the old age black was not counted fair

n the old age black was not counted fair,
Or if it were, it bore not beauty's name;
But now is black beauty's successive heir,
And beauty slandered with a bastard shame.
For since each hand hath put on nature's power,
Fairing the foul with art's false borrowed face,
Sweet beauty hath no name no holy bower,
But is profaned, if not lives in disgrace.
Therefore my mistress' eyes are raven black,
Her eyes so suited, and they mourners seem,
At such who, not born fair no beauty lack,
Sland'ring creation with a false esteem.
Yet so they mourn, becoming of their woe,
That every tongue says beauty should look so.

Thy gift, thy tables, are within my brain

Thy gift, thy tables, are within my brain
Full charactered with lasting memory,
Which shall above that idle rank remain
Beyond all date even to eternity—
Or at the least, so long as brain and heart
Have faculty by nature to subsist;
Till each to razed oblivion yield his part
Of thee, thy record never can be missed.
That poor retention could not so much hold,
Nor need I tallies thy dear love to score;
Therefore to give them from me was I bold,
To trust those tables that receive thee more.
To keep an adjunct to remember thee
Were to import forgetfulness in me.

Favourite Poem

A Friend's Love
By Jacquilyn Flory

No one really knows
What kind of bond we share
And even if I told them
They probably wouldn't care

You are very dear to me
I hope you know it's true
And now that you are sick
Tell me what that I should do?

While you've been gone
A part of me has been lost
It's like I've taken our friendship for granted
And now I'm paying the cost

I never knew how much you meant to me
Until you went away
The thought of you being really sick
Haunted me every day

I spent a few days at school alone
And my weekend was such a bore
A lot of my time was spent in my room
I think my mom's ready to break down the door

And now I make this vow to you
To keep until the end
I'll help you through the pain and tears
Until our rivers bend

So if you ever need someone
You know just who to call
I'll be here by the phone
To catch you if you fall

".....ready to break down the door"This is a hyperbole. The author uses it to exaggerate the time spent in the room.

I like this poem because it shows a person's care and concern for a friend. It shows how close the two are. The words used in the poem express the author's life without her friend, the vacuum in her life without her friend. She was ready to help her friend in any way she could. She realises how much she misses her friend and how much that cost her. There was a strong bond between her and her friend. Her mind was almost in a blank when she realised that her friend was ill. This shows the true, deep friendship between the author and her friend.

The Mercurial Tom

The Terror Of Murders is on the street.
People are dying.
Every night is a horror.
No where is safe.
They say there's a new hope.
But on this dark night,
it was downed.
"They will never learn, will they?"
My partner sighed and threw the corpse into the gutter.
"Who's next on the list?"

The Uninvited Movie Review

*I was not invited to write this review so ahem... The uninvited review*

The movie was frightening as well as interesting. Would a mentally unstable person really imagine so many things that she would kill four innocent people. The first two died together. Mother and sister were killed accidentally when a gas tap was not turned off and a candle was knocked down, causing the boathouse to explode. After coming back from the mental hospital, the girl, Anna thought that her sister, Alex was still alive and that the stepmother,Rachel, meant to kill the whole family and was actually Mildred Kemp, a serial killer. Anna begins to hallucinate even worse, imagining that her mother was trying to tell her that it was Rachel who had murdered her.

When her boyfriend Matt wanted to meet her at night, she pushes him off the rocks into the sea and imagined that it was Rachel who had killed him. Anna thought that Rachel, had killed Matt to silence him when it was she who had killed her mother and Alex. Then there were the Wright siblings. They were the victims of Mildred Kemp. They were stabbed repeatedly after being sedated. Anna keeps on seeing them. Anna went to the police station to report that Rachel was Mildred Kemp and the police officer thought that Anna was mentally unsound. In the end, Anna killed Rachel after being sedated and thinking that Rachel was going to kill her. This movie makes me think how serious a mental illness or trauma can affect a person. Is it serious enough to make him or her kill? This movie was quite horribly scary with all the sound effects but I liked it anyway because it stimulates imagination and thinking.

P.S. I got a nightmare after watching this show.

Book review on Arthur High King of Britian

This story tells the tale of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table in a different way. This story does not begin just with the sword in the stone and all, but with a little boy who meets King Arthur as an old man, hibernating. The boy had gone fishing and swam to a nearby island against his parents' instructions. He nearly drowned until and Arthur found him and began to tell the boy his story. The story of King Arthur.

The story was told in the perspective of Arthur. The story reveals much that I did not know, such as King Arthur running away from home and meeting Merlin or King Arthur having a dogs named Bercelet. The story includes several touching parts in which the hero of that particular section gets hacked or chopped to pieces. Then in the end, King Arthur or Merlin comes to save the day. Arthur made several bad decisions which resulted in Modred being able to wreak havoc while Arthur was fighting Lancelot, once his good friend, in France. Modred and his army were destroyed but so was King Arthur's army. The story ends when the boy decides to go home after hearing the story only to find out only a few hours had passed even though the man had said it was a day and a half.

"Here in this place, we are beyond the reach of time."

Reflection on Blogging for Term 2

It has been 2 terms since I started blogging. Blogging improves my writing skills. Now I start to write micro-blogs like this one. It would help me write "tighter"and removes the unnecessary adverbs and descriptive phrases. I would continue to write blogs, which are short yet precise. I urge you all to do so too.

Going

A new life! I am finally enjoying myself.
I don't care about people staring at me.
I am being served great food and being taken care of.
A sudden flash of lightning caught me by surprise.
I fell over. My new life was becoming no life at all
Then I heard "Zebra overboard!".

My Parents' comments on my reading habits.

My parents were happy to see me reading so many books. They were not very particular about me reading all those magical books and fantasy. "It will stimulate your imagination." they said, encouraging me to think out of the box and think of endless possibilities. They only told me to read more Chinese books. I then explained that this was an English bookshelf and that I had read Chinese books as well. They encourage me to keep up the good work and read more books. They recommended non-fiction which I don't really like to read.

Father's Memorable Read

The book that my father most remembers is "The Jungle is Neutral". My father had read the book when he was in secondary 2. The book was a book prize he won for acing his History examinations.

This story is a re-count by F. Spencer Chapman as the commander of British Force 136, a motley band of anti-Japanese guerrilla fighters made up of British military, Communist as well as Kuo-Min-Tang (KMT, the Chinese Nationalist Party) elements.

As Chapman traveled by bicycle, motorcycle, dugout, on foot, or on his belly through the jungle muck, Chapman recruited sympathetic Chinese, Malays, Tamils, and Sakai tribesman into an irregular corps of jungle fighters.

Their mission was to harass the Japanese in any way possible. In some scenes, Chapman recalls their daring raids as they blew up bridges, cut communication lines, and affixed plastic explosives to troop-filled trucks idling by the road. They threw grenades and disappeared into the jungle, their faces darkened with carbon, their sub-machine guns wrapped in tape so as not to reflect the moonlight. When Chapman wasn't battling the Japanese or escaping from their prisons, he found himself fighting the jungle's harsh conditions.

My father finds in it significant relevance to the formation and political development of Malaya, and subsequently Malaysia and Singapore. He also finds Chapman's narrative to be a delightful read, full of amusing anecdotes that do not subtract from it's seriousness of the situation. He particularly enjoys the part about Spencer's cheating death when captured by the Japanese. Unbeknown to Chapman, the British High Command has elevated his rank from Captain to Major so the Japanese was offering a reward for the head of a certain Major Chapman. The Captain Chapman was then able to crawl out of the captive tent into the darkness of the dense Malayan jungle to continue his exploits.

I decided that since it was such an interesting book, I would want to read it too.

Confessions of a book-lover

Book-lovers have their fair share of unjust comments such as bookworm, nerd and the like. However this is rather grossly unfair. Without book-lovers such as myself, there would not be much need for libraries and authors anymore.

However, I confess that perhaps I like books a little too much. I could not bear to see a book soiled and dirtied. I like to make myself oblivious to all else by reading a book. I drown myself in a story when I am feeling down. When I suddenly remember a particular scene in a book that made me laugh, feel happy or any other emotion, I would take the book right out of my bookshelf and read the particular portion.

As a book-lover, I would usually buy the books I have in mind or borrow them. I also like to collect books that are in a series like General Grevious collects his victim's lightsaber(that is a portion from Starwars). Whenever I look at my collection of books I feel so proud.

To all book-lovers out there in this world, do not be ashamed of your love of books. Be proud of it!

All-out fight.

Wow! When I used to learn martial arts, I did not know what uses it has. However, after hearing a story from my former schoolmate, I truly appreciate the martial art's value.

When I first heard of my friend's story, I could not believe my ears! My long-time friend, was actually a hero in his class. At first I thought he was faking it. But later as I listened, I believed it.

One of my friends classmate and friend had gotten into a fight with another classmate who was some kind of bully. He and the other classmates managed to pull the two boys away from each other.

Then after school the next day, the bully got 6 of his Sec 2 and Sec 3 friends to beat up my friend. They were actually armed and dangerous! My blood chilled when I heard that they were armed. However the bullies did not count on one thing: my friend's black belt in martial arts. He said he managed to hold them off and defeat them until the Discipline Master of the school came and ordered the boys to stop. While my friend only got a little cut on his arm, the bullies went home with black eyes and broken bones.

What a thrilling and yet true story.

Poor, Poor Me!

Poor, Poor Me! The past few months have been so dreadful. It felt like eternity to me. My problems all started when I was told for humming the national anthem by Miss Narwin, my homeroom teacher. Then, when I told my very supportive, maybe a little over supportive parents, they told me to stand up for my own rights. I did and continued to hum as I have always did.

In the end I was suspended for continuously "causing a disturbance". I was really angry at Miss Narwin and I told my father about it. My father then wanted me to talk to one of his friends, Ted Griffen. Mr Griffen knew a reporter from Manchester Records. He asked me to tell the reporter could report the incident of me being suspended for humming the national anthem. At that time, I was really very angry at Miss Narwin so I decided to lie that I was singing. Little did I know that this news would make it to the national newspaper.

Now that Miss Narwin has resigned, I actually feel sorry for causing her so much trouble until she had to resign. If only I did not hum in class and lie that I was singing, then Miss Narwin would still be teaching. Sorry Miss Narwin.

But still, I am off to Washington Academy with no track.Arrrgh!I can't live without it.Poor, Poor Me!

About my blog writing

For the past few months, I have been writing blogs, like I am now. This really helpful to my writing. My writing skills have really improved since I started writing blogs. My teacher says:"There is no good writing, only re-writing. The only way to improve is to write more." So here I am, writing more to improve my writing.

Now I am becoming more attached to this blog. Writing a post would make me more relaxed as I have to recall the exact details of the incident I am writing about. I also never post a blog once I am done with it. I would save it, then I would check through the blog repeatedly for mistakes. Finally, when I am quite sure there are no grammatical errors and all the facts are true, I would click "submit".

This is however, a little problematic, as I have to look over the blog. Nonetheless, I still like writing blogs as they allow me to express myself.

Other than writing blogs, I have started to read my other books to improve my English. I have an electronic bookshelf in weread.com and now I have a book that I am reading. It is entitled "The Merry Adventures Of Robin Hood".

I encourage you readers to start blogging today.

Connection between a graphic novel and a narrative

There are many differences between a graphic novel and a narrative. But there are also some similarities. Today I had a great lesson trying to piece together parts of a graphic novel. We were split up into groups of about six, and then we were given pictures to arrange to "tell" a story. Although there was not a single word in those pictures, it told a very good story that all our group could understand.

On the other hand, we also studied a narrative titled "Nothing But The Truth". It was a very interesting story to read. It was all words and not a picture was included in the book. It was also well understood by our group.

Both of them tell a story. The story is told in a different away though. A graphic novel has many viewpoints. These viewpoints actually express the writer's own thoughts on the subject. A narrative, tells the story from many character's point of view; in this case the author does not convey his thoughts through the story.

These are stories. Stories that I shall enjoy, be it a graphic novel or a narrative.

P.S: My preferred learning styles are Interpersonal, Intrapersonal, and Linguistic in order.

Why did I do it?

Oh the horror! My new classmates have discovered that I don't know the lyrics to "The Star-Spangled Banner" our national anthem! I was invited to lead the class in the singing of the anthem when suddenly, I could not control myself and I broke down in tears. I had disappointed the entire nation when I could not lead the class in the anthem.

When I told the teacher that I did not know the lyrics, she and the class just stared at me, not in respect but with anger. They felt that I had lied to them, to gain attention. Well, perhaps I did lie a little, but that was because of that Miss Narwin teacher. She could not even take a joke! I still feel she still has it in for me. Those little, barely noticeable, innocent little lies, should not have affected the nation like this.

Now I am feeling a little guilty. Sigh! I wish none of this would have happened. If only I did not try to annoy Miss Narwin, which is about as safe as poking a hibernating grizzly in the eye, I would still be back in Harrison High School with my friends and I might be in the track team.

Miss Narwin, if you happen to be reading this, I am really sorry.

My Reading Habits

Books. They surround my life. I love reading. Reading is an important part of my life, an indispensable part.

I am often seen walking around the school with my head buried in a book; during recess, waiting for the next teacher to come in while my classmates are making a lot of noise, causing chaos and mayhem or maybe when the teacher is droning on and on and on about a particularly boring topic.(Just joking!)

I am also in the library club. Therefore, the library is my "hangout". The books there are rather fascinating. It includes not much of the books I like such as magic and fantasy but there is another topic I like to know more about. World War 2. There is a great wealth of knowledge to be gained from those books in the library. It is fascinating to learn about the battles of not only Singapore and the Japanese, but also the Americans, the British, and the Germans.
You might say that I am a bookworm, as I love reading so much that everything else would become oblivious to me once I pick up a book I like, but those who know me well would know better. Fortunately, my classmates have yet to call me a bookworm.

I would definitely continue to read books and a greater variety to increase my knowledge.

Beginning of life in secondary school

I have just gotten past my first week of secondary school. I did not know it would be so different! The first week was mostly fun, and sweat. It was for us to orientate ourselves and to "break the ice".

There are now so many extra facilities in the school such as science laboratories, an auditorium and even a swimming pool! That is what I always wanted in my primary school. Many parts of the school is also air-conditioned, that is great for a person like me who perspires so much. The environment is really different. The school compound is so much larger and so is the field and the hall.

However their canteen is really different. The food sold is much tastier, the portions are larger, but the price is HIGH. What used to cost only 60 cents now costs $1.50. Wonder if all secondary students have bigger mouths and tummies. Surely they need to have bigger wallets. The good thing is that my pocket money has also increased! You see, my father is a man of compassion. The only smaller thing in the school compared to my primary school is the classrooms. Why? Don't know.

I have made some new friends.I have also met all our subject teachers. They were mostly nice but strict looking. We are supposed to read up on a lot of things to be able to complete our homework. This makes the subjects much more interesting and I like it better this way.

I really hope I will enjoy my secondary school life.
Just hope I don't get lost in the vastness first.
